Another bucket list wish is to get into boating. This is a common nerdy theme, based on a wish to own a starship, but living in a non-space-dwelling era. Yes, while I can’t be captain of the starship Enterprise or the Millennium Falcon, owning a teeny, tiny cruiser is within the realms of possibility.
Thus, I have once again decided to dip a toe into the murky waters of budget-boating. A couple of days ago I bought a relatively derelict Westerly Nimrod sailboat. This vintage boat, of which only 186 were built between 1968 and 1971, was an early design by incredibly prolific boat designer Ian Proctor. When shipshape, it is a small, sturdy, shallow-draft swing keeler.
This is what it should look like:
And here’s mine:
Quite an undertaking then.
Portentously, there seem to be a whole host of boaty movies on at the mo, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (on as I type these very words) and Titanic was on a few weeks ago too. Hmmm.
Stay posted for updates.
