Second Run: American Splendor, Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself and Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman

I don’t have many dates.  But sod it, if I’m not the best picker of date movies ever.  I went on a few dates with this girl (who’s probably not reading this) many moons ago and chose Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman, American Splendor and Wilbur Wants To Kill Himself.  I’ll not bore you with the details, but the films were more successful than the dates (but at least my choices were appreciated by the datee).

All three excellent films deserve a pizza night showing.  Zatoichi is a Beat Takeshi, comedy, musical and martial arts film .  American Splendor is the biopic of Harvey Pekar, a brilliant underground comic book writer, superbly played by Paul Giamatti. Finally, Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself is about two brothers, one self-centred and suicidal, the other serious and quiet and a woman.  Their lives revolve around an inherited bookshop.  Very funny, very moving.

Five out of five chainsaws for all three.

I’m still up this late because the burglar alarm went off.  That’s not code- it actually went off at 04.30 in the morning.
