So now that we’re well into the latest Hollywood TV season it’s time for a round-up. In case you’ve been dead for the last few years, I’ve added a quick summary of what the shows are about so you can catch up. I’ve been watching-
Alcatraz (J.J. Abrams’s new baby: a whole wing of prisoners escaped through time)
Uber-nerd boffin, comic writer and comic shop owner Dr. Diego Soto (Jorge Garcia- Hurley from Lost) has partnered up with pretty, tough and totally into him Detective Rebecca Madsen (Sarah Jones). Their job? Bring in the time-traveling bad guys. Soto is livin’ the nerd dream! Their secondary mission is to find out what their boss Hauser (Sam Neill) is really up to.
Big Bang theory (Nerd-life comedy about science guys at Caltech)
Sheldon’s relationship is developing with Amy, Howard’s marriage is coming up (providing he survives any future encounter with Bernadette’s right-wing nut dad). Leonard and Penny’s relationship has been rekindled, somewhat unsteadily. Raj is still stuck with no one to play his clarinet.
Fringe (J.J. Abram’s ultimate “what if” with alternate universes colliding)
Peter’s finally getting help from both the Other Walter and the Other Walternate. Looks like Massive Dynamic is behind the shape-shifters with Nina Sharp pulling the strings of the Keyser Söze-like ghastly apparatchik* Dr. David Robert Jones (Jared Harris, Richard Harris’s son and great at playing creepy). I must say that the plot is getting byzantine and confusing even for me. Trivia- when the series was last filming John Noble shopped in my local Safeway in Vancouver. I’m so glad I never bumped into him. Hate to peek behind the curtain.
(*Will a Russian speaking Fringe fan please tell me if I used the word apparatchik correctly?).
House (Sherlock Holmes transferred to a medical setting)
House continues his bad good-guy thing. Wilson is getting even more annoying. Wish House brought his motorcycle back. Or the skateboard!
Grimm (Detective finds out that he has an ancestral duty to police fairy tale creatures)
Ahhh, I am enjoying this Fables-like series, though I wish someone would explain the mechanism of why no-one apart from Grimms can see the true forms of the various fairy tale creatures. Yes, I know it’s only a TV show, but I wouldn’t be a geek if these questions never plagued me. I do like the wolf-guy Monroe horologist (Silas Weir Mitchell) and I think they’ve casted all the other main characters well too. Detective Nick Burkhardt (the Grimm) is played by David Giuntoli; he seems to have the dark middle-European look one might expect from someone with sinister olde worlde roots. And, of course, Bitsie Tulloch as Juliette Silverton- Nick’s girlfriend. Is she going to turn out to be Snow White or something? I just have a strange feeling- she’s a vet with an affinity with animals etc…
How I Met Your Mother (Sitcom about some friends and their on-off relationships)
Lily’s (Alyson Hannigan) is even more pregnant. Not much to catch up on other than that, just watch away. The one thing I can say, though, for the love of all that is holy, MORE Stinson!!!
Game of thrones (Fantasy world war for the throne… with zombies)
It’s is definitely back starting on the 1st of April (no, it really is apparently). So many good characters, but Peter Dinklage’s Tyrion Lannister is so obviously the best character in the show. I really like that he is the very antithesis of a fantasy hero. Cowardly (and wisely so), utterly unheroic and the long suffering “runt” of his diabolical family in a diabolical society set on a diabolical world. I haven’t read the books, but I’m guessing that with a name like “Tyrion”, there’s some very important, nay regal-like role for him in the future? If you’ve read the books, please don’t tell me!
Here’s the teaser for season two-
