Best popcorn movies from under the sea! (Or rather cockles and whelks – something I inexplicably actually used to like).
Cthulhu (2007): I’ve started with this one, because you probably haven’t seen it. Great and unusual adaptation of the Lovecraftian mythos.
City in the Sea: Yet another gem almost no one seems to have seen. Vincent Price is in it so you know its going to be batty!
Triangle: The best Bermuda triangle film EVER!
Jaws: This Spielberg masterpiece scared the living hell out of me. I was about eight when I first convinced my mum to take me to see it. For about a year after the film, I had to get mum to check under the bed for sharks (we do not live on a boat). I also became very adept at swimming really fast.
Deep Blue Sea: Not so scary, but great shocking moment when Samuel L…
The Creature from the Black Lagoon: Die laughing. I was pretty young when I first saw it, but even then I thought it was hilarious. Fantastic pulp movie posters for this one.
Warlords of Atlantis: Another McClure rumpus that my mum took me to see (I think she might secretly be a nerd).
Das Boot: Can’t really fault this film, it’s perfect and makes every other submarine movie before and since look sub-par.
The Sphere: I enjoyed the book, so I watched the movie too. Passable for a video night (remember those?) The actors chosen also seem to fit the characters described in the book.
The Abyss: More aliens underwater, but enjoyable because it makes the military like a bunch of bonzos. The effects are great too.
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Yes,this is the one where James Mason plays the organ. This loose 1954 Disney adaptation has never been beat. It also starred the excellent Kirk Douglas. Apparently another remake is on its way.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The only reason to see this travesty of a comic book adaptation (probably had Alan Moore pulling his huge beard out) is for the depiction of Captain Nemo’s Nautilus. It really looks quite beautiful.
